Together with Farmlogics, Barry Callebaut created a digital platform that empowers farmers with personalized support, reliable tools, and a clear path to long-term success.

The Challenge 

Behind every bar of chocolate lies the eort of thousands of farmers. Many faced poor yields due to limited knowledge of modern agricultural practices. Years of intensive farming had degraded the soil, while unpredictable weather made planning increasingly dicult. 

Financial challenges were equally pressing. Without stable credit or market access, farmers struggled to sustain operations. Connectivity—whether physical, economic, or digital—was scarce, leaving many communities cut o from opportunities to improve their livelihoods. 

Barry Callebaut set out to address these challenges, determined to provide farmers with the knowledge, resources, and systems needed to build resilient, productive farms. 

The Farmlogics Approach 

Farmlogics partnered with Barry Callebaut to co-create a farmer-first solution built on the Outgrowers Platform. The goal was to design practical tools that could work in the field, even in remote areas, while also scaling to manage a global network of farmers.

The mobile application gave field coaches the ability to support farmers directly on their farms. They could conduct surveys, generate tailored Farmer Business Plans, and forecast yields and revenues up to 15 years ahead. Intelligent algorithms recommended the right input packages, while integrated tools managed contracts, payments, and supply chain activities. Even support for non-cocoa crops was built in, helping farmers diversify and strengthen their income. 

The web application extended this capability across the organization. It centralized the data of nearly one million farmers and thousands of coaches, provided flexible multi-language and multi-currency options, and enabled detailed reporting with performance dashboards. Together, these tools created a connected ecosystem that linked Barry Callebaut with its farmer communities more directly than ever before. 

The Impact 

The results of this collaboration were both immediate and far-reaching. Farmers began receiving personalized business plans that guided them on improving yields, rehabilitating soils, and boosting income. Coaches, armed with better tools and insights, were able to deliver focused training on cocoa quality, traceability, sustainability, child protection, and health and safety. 

With improved access to planting materials and agricultural inputs, farmers adopted more sustainable practices and became better prepared to face climate challenges. At the same time, performance tracking revealed measurable improvements not only in farmer productivity but also in coach eectiveness. 

Barry Callebaut can now connect more meaningfully with its farmer communities, supporting livelihoods while securing a reliable supply of high-quality cocoa for generations to come.
